Good point. Very good point. First of all, in this country education seems to have taken a back seat. Its terrible, but rap music is a powerful commodity for the economy. Im not going to say I dont listen to it though. I do like listening to alot of eminem's stuff. He is influential in the way that no one has done what he has done before. Plus his lyrics are real and dont involve:
"yo yo, I wanna fuck you, yo,
your a hoe,
but i know I like dough,
in my pocket
gave you a locket,
my dick's like a rocket and a gun,
cuz i cock it."
Lame shit like this, (and as you can see, Im not a professional song writer) gets into the mind of children because:
1) Its catchy
2) The rappers make it look so easy to make money (thus conflicting with the idea that school is cool (instead school is for fools).
3) Kids like shiny objects (ie: ICE BIOTCH!!)
Teachers get the shaft in effect, because music is an instant money maker. And the music industry is a powerful conglomerate that just consumes the public. Its about corporations and money and blah, blah, blah. You know, now that I reviewed this whole thing that I wrote, I really didnt answer the question. But maybe someone else can elaborate on what I wrote down here. lol. Sorry. I just babble sometimes.
my biggest issue in the u.s. though is the fact that kids grow up wanting to be rock stars w/ fame & fortune. it seems that old & young we all want to be famous, & that's mostly because the golden age of hollywood is long gone; no longer are the requirements for celebrity good looks & talent... there are so many ways to get your 15 minutes from airing yourself on you tube to jumping on a reality show. so no wonder society is unsatisfactory, who in their right mind would settle for years of college for 20k a year as a teacher when you could mumble mediocre lines over sampling w/ a GED? makes sense to me.
i have a deep interest in hollywood as it was in its infancy through the fifties. every woman was abnormally beautiful, the men incredibly handsome. their craft was their religion & hollywood was rife w/ scandal & intrigue.
i probably watch tv more than most, honestly, & its been a looong time since i've actually enjoyed a movie. talent is hard to come by, it seems, and "normal" folks like you and i are staring out from the screen. although at times entertaining, i think a whole new tide has turned harmful. real careers that matter are suffering for many peoples' obsession w/ being beautiful & adored, as well (& i believe most of all) "easy" loads of money.
also, so many tv shows focus on displaying celebrities' houses, clothes & cars that we could never hope to afford! i dunno, does anyone else see how potentially harmful that is? it couldn't possibly make you feel good after watching stuff like that... maybe jealous, hopeless & sad that you live in a shabby 1 room apt., work 50 hours a week & struggle to make ends meet!
or the hunger for a Louis Vuitton purse etc is so great that people will live totallu beyond their means; hence slapping $1000 rims on a $500 hoopty. hollywood (as it is now) has so invaded our lives that our outward appearance means everything, i.e. stepping out of your sister's family's 3 room apt. in $300 Tims.
i'm literally nodding out at the keyboard! sorry for rambling on, but thanks for the response, dez... you're no chump, you defnitely know what you're talking about. --z
